Council Tax Disabled Band Reduction Scheme

Your local council (Disabled Band Reduction Scheme)

Phone / post / in person England, Scotland, Wales only
GOV.UK

Council tax charged at the band below yours (Band A properties get 17% off instead)

Cost: Free to apply

What you get

Your bill is worked out as if the property were in the next band down (e.g. a Band D home is billed at Band C rates). Band A properties get a 17% discount instead, since there's no band below A.

Who qualifies

A disabled person (adult or child, not necessarily the bill payer) must live in the property, which must have an extra bathroom, kitchen or other room needed for the disabled person, or extra indoor space to use a wheelchair. Applies whether or not the household also gets Council Tax Reduction (the separate means-tested discount).

Evidence accepted

  • Council assessment/visit
  • Occupational therapist report (helpful but not always required)
IMPORTANT TO NOTE Relevant where a stoma, severe urgency or mobility needs have led to home adaptations, e.g. a downstairs shower room or wet room built for faster or easier toilet access.
